Here’s a great opportunity for Yukon Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders and Guiders!

This year’s theme is: Girls worldwide say….”together we can end poverty and extreme hunger”. The deadline is Dec. 13. The final size of the card will be 5.5” x 4” inches.

Please send designs by email or by mail to Philippa Wagner, 23 Templeson Rd NE, Calgary, AB, T1Y 5L5. Make sure to include the artist’s name, contact info (email or phone number) and Guiding level (Spark, Brownie, etc).

Mint Cookie Sales Start

October 21, 2009 at 3:59 pm | In Fundraising, Opportunities | Leave a Comment

Chocolatey mint cookies are now available at the Guide Office for purchase or consignment sales. The price is still $4 a box. Guiders are invited to sign out a case (or 2 or 3 …) to sell to parents, friends and cookie fans. This is one of our major fundraisers for the year.

We are fortunate to have secured space at local stores for sales this month and next:

  • Canadian Tire — 1-4 pm — Oct. 25, Nov. 14 & Nov. 28
  • Wal-Mart — 1-4 pm — Oct. 24, Oct. 25 & Nov. 28
  • Olympic Torch Festival — 3-8 pm — Nov. 3 (Shipyards Park)

We still need volunteers for November. Contact the office if your unit can take a shift, please. If you have questions about cookies, check out the FAQ provided by Guides Canada.

Challenges add spice to our program

September 24, 2009 at 10:14 am | In General, Opportunities | Leave a Comment

All units are getting a new booklet full of great ideas — Guiding Challenges.

These challenges are an appealing option to the ‘regular program’ since they’re designed to be a “meeting in a box.”  The Program Team ensures that challenges are well designed with good instructions and resources. Many also cover off program activities too.

Special next year is the 2010 Centennial Challenge. Interested? Check out the full list of challenges on the Alberta Guiding web site .

Questions? Just contact me … Shannon L’Heureux, Yukon Area Program Adviser  See ‘Contact Us’ page for e-address and phone number.

Camp Training Coming Up

September 24, 2009 at 9:48 am | In Opportunities, Sprucewind Camp | Leave a Comment

Yukon Guiding is pleased to offer Guiders new and old (er, experienced!) a Camp Training this year on Oct. 16 & 17. Planning and delivering a camp can be stressful if you don’t have the tools or experience. This training is designed to help you get comfortable with our Sprucewind facility and teach you new skills you can use with your girls. Come sing songs, enjoy a cookout, practice filling out paperwork, view a working camp, and learn new skills!  A full agenda and kit list is now available — contact Camping Adviser Carrie McClelland for a copy. RSVP by Oct. 12 please.  See ‘Contact Us’ page for e-addresses and phone numbers.

Getting ready for 2009-10

August 24, 2009 at 10:14 am | In Events, Opportunities, Sprucewind Camp | Leave a Comment

Members of the Yukon Council Executive met at Sprucewind Aug. 22 to plan the coming year — training for Guiders, girl events, the annual Bazaar, etc. A dedicated few started the weekend on Friday night by sprucing up the storage room. Thanks!

Recruitment of new leaders is now underway. If you have a friend who you think would make a great Guider, please ask her to join! Girl greatness starts with great leaders.

The ‘Coming Events’ section has been updated to reflect the two big registration events coming up. You can also register at the Guide Office — check our ‘Contact Us’ page for days and times we’re open.
