Volunteer Management |  Friday, Sept. 30 (7-9:30)
The Volunteer Management module is designed to help you understand why people volunteer, what people want from volunteering and how you, as a team leader, can help volunteers to achieve these things in order to become more productive team members. It also addresses the principles behind targeted recruitment in order for you to be able to create a workable plan that will enable you to fill a real, specific role on one of your teams. This module will cover putting your team together, staffing a position, and supporting and honouring your team. This training will be held at the Canada Games Centre, in the boardroom on the main floor.

Girls United – Helping Girls connect in Healthy Ways | Sunday, Oct. 2 (9 – 11:30am)
Girls today need to know how to get along with others, how to build strong connections with each other, how to be a support for each other and how to build strong, rewarding friendships with other girls. This is an enrichment training for Guiders to give you a deeper understanding of how to recognize social aggression (bullying) and take action to provide girls with safe places. Adults who are untrained rarely aid children who are bullied. This training gives adults tools to take action through:

  • An introduction to the dynamics of girls’ relationships, and
  • Age-appropriate strategies for promoting healthy relationships.

We will provide Lunch. This training will be held at the Canada Games Centre, in the boardroom on the main floor.

Building Strong Teams | Sunday, Oct. 2 (1 – 3:30pm)
The Building Strong Teams module is designed to give you an understanding of what a team is and how it works. It will give you skills to improve the teams you lead or are a member of. This module will teach you about the characteristics of an efficient team, team development and team building, the characteristics of a leader, and the preparation and facilitation skills needed to be a better leader. This training will be held at the Canada Games Centre, in the boardroom on the main floor.

If you would like to attend any and all of these trainings please contact Kerri at the Guide Office (667-2455). Let her know which trainings you would like to take, so we can ensure enough food and snacks are on hand. Thanks to Natalie Taylor and Alberta Trainer Leslie Horton for these great opportunities!

Training Day Sept. 18

September 13, 2011 at 6:57 am | Posted in Opportunities | Leave a comment

Welcome to new Guiders and welcome back for returning Guiders to another fun filled year of Guiding! This Guiding year we are focussing our energy on training — starting with a training day in Safe Guide (new Guiders) and programming ideas (returning Guiders). We will then get together as one group and play some teambuilding/icebreaking games so we can get to know one another and you can use these games in your units. We will finish off the day with a group session.

The training will run from 12:30-4:30 pm in the Boardroom of the TC Richards Building. We will also be distributing the newest copy of Safe Guide as well as your new unit binders. There will also be prizes!

This Training is mandatory for everyone. While it would be best if all Guiders attended, at a minimum one Guider per unit should be present so that all units have the same information and can benefit from networking and the experiences of other Guiders in the same branch.

Thank you Henny!

Many thanks to Henny Smit-Nielsen for an interesting and provoking presentation Sept. 7 about International Opportunities in Guiding. Henny is the International Adviser to Alberta Council. Judging from the conversations and questions afterwards, we’ve got a lot of interest here in connecting our girls to the world through program activities and travel. For more information about International visit the Alberta Girl Guides website or contact Erin Dixon, Yukon Council’s new Program/International Adviser. Thank you Henny for taking time out from your personal Yukon vacation to connect with us!

Fall is here and units are gearing up for another year of fun, sleepovers, challenges, food, and crafts. Guiders — experienced or new — are need for the following units:

  • Brownies — Porter Creek Brownies
  • Brownies — Riverdale Brownies (2 Guiders in place)
  • Brownies & Guides — Teslin Guiding (1 Guider in place)
  • Mixed — Faro Guiding (1 Guider in place)
  • Guides — Porter Creek Guides (1 Guider in place)

This year we will be doing a lot more training, both face to face and online. Our goal is to ensure Guiders feel well supported and comfortable with delivering the program for their group. If you know of someone interested in Guiding, have her give the Guide Office, Natalie or Nancy a call.

All Yukon Guiders and youth members are invited to a special evening with Alberta Council’s International Adviser, Henny Smit-Nielsen. Join us at the Beringia Centre for the hour-long presentation, with a short reception to follow. Questions?  Call Nancy at 667-4616.
