pathfinders

The 4th Saturday of every month you will find us cooking up a stormpathfinders at the United Church. We make soup and sandwiches for upwards of 100 homeless people. The Outreach Van stops by around 4:30 and the girls load them up for the night run.
We also participated in the Valentine Tea and Social at Hellaby Hall
on Saturday, Feb 14th . We baked and brought crafts to sell. Great opportunity to meet other crafters and engage in girl chat. We filled decorated bags full of love & sweets and gave them to the ladies at Kaushee’s place. Of course they were delighted!
Finally we helped out again with a successful Kidsdezvous – Games , Facepainting , Cake Walks and Hot Chocolate. We all loved the Egg Toss – Thanks Nancy Deasty!!!!

Get to know Carrie

snowshoeHello, my name is Carrie and I’m volunteering as the camp manager for Guides Yukon.  Having grown up in the Toronto suburbs I have become quite good at escaping the city and enjoying the outdoors.  I spent many summers camping and canoeing with my family, attending Doe Lake Girl Guide Camp, or working for a number of different camps and resorts in the Muskoka region.  This love for the outdoors has led to many adventures rock climbing, hiking, canoeing tripping, and whitewater kayaking.  I later decided to study outdoor recreation, parks, and tourism at Lakehead University, eventually earning a Master’s of Environmental Studies in Nature-based Recreation and Tourism.  I came to Whitehorse to do research for Grad school and can’t bring myself to return to the city!

As Camp Manager I hope to act as a valuable resource to Guiders and girls regarding getting outdoors and active.  In addition to managing our beautiful Sprucewind camp facility, I would like to host some camping workshops and camp orientation to provide information to Guiders who are thinking about taking their girls on some outdoor adventures but don’t know where to get started.  Most of all, I want to make myself available to Guiders to help plan activities, camps, games, and provide you all with ideas, skills, and resources that you can then share with your girls!

You have all received a short survey in your mailboxes to find out some areas where you may need support or more information.  The 5 minutes you take to provide some feedback means that I will able to tailor workshops and webpostings to better meet your needs! If you have any other questions or comments please don’t ever hesitate to contact me at carrie.mcclellandatlakeheadu.ca or 335-1112.  Happy Camping!

Kidsdezvous 2009

kidsdezvousFebruary brought longer days and a Rendezvous Party to celebrate. Shipyards Park was full of fun: kids sliding, skating, and creating your own garter to prevent being arrested by the Keystone Kops. Yukon Girl Guides and Pathfinders were on hand to deliver Kidsdezvous and provided games and activities to entertain.

Yukon Sparks came out to decorate the bus for the parade. The enthusiasm demonstrated during the parade was recognized with the award of ‘Best Youth Presentation.’ Congratulations to all and thanks for participating!
